Roller blades?

I got a pair of roller blades as a gift. I don%26#039;t know how to use them. How can I learn how?

Roller blades?
Have you ever skated on quad skates (4 wheels in a rectangle) or ice skates? If so, you should be able to stand and move in short order.

Before you head out, I strongly recommend a helmet and wrist guards. If you fall, your hands are likely to get beat up unless you have some protection on them. Hitting your head is much less common but the results are much worse. I know of people who have had concussions from falling and hitting their heads and one that died in a relatively safe location when he hit his head on a concrete floor.

The other pads depend on how much you worry and how likely you are to fall. The knees tend to get beaten up a lot when falling. Usually when you get pads that include knee pads, you also get elbow pads. They are good to use until you get comfortable and can make an educated decision about them.

You can get beginner%26#039;s information from www.getrolling.com/ . Liz%26#039;s beginner%26#039;s check list has a links to specific skills (along with promoting her book and lessons). Liz%26#039;s book is very good.

Especially look at the braking and stride sections.

The braking section includes the basic stance for beginners to use with skating.

If you are at all uncomfortable at first. Put your skates on and stand on a carpeted surface or in grass. This lets you get used to the balance. (if you are on a harder type of carpet, you can take your first few strides that way.

Lessons will help you improve your skill much faster than without them and can help you avoid bad habits that will slow you down or make it more likely that you will fall.

If you decide to take a lesson, I recommend that you learn to stand up and move first (I have seen people who could not do that when I first met them) because it will let the lesson teach you the actual use of your skates instead of how to stand.

If you want to take lessons, I would look for a local skate club (google search works well for that) since they will know who the local instructors are.

You can also go to www.unitedskateschools.org/Member%20Dire... to find a certified by the group for the quality of their instruction.

The next thing is to learn how to stop.
Reply:get on them, and go.... its like sliding in the snow
Reply:You could take lessons or if you%26#039;re able to stand up in them, it%26#039;s really easy to start. Just try keeping your balance, and the first place I would try them, would be on the smoothest surface you can find nearby. Start rolling by trying to walk like you normally would, and once you get used to that, try sliding with your feet inclined towards each other. You might need an open place to start. Or I guess you could just go to a skating rink and hold on to the railing until you get used to them.
